Pathways into Mathematics of SPDEs:
A Workshop for Young Researchers
About the workshop
Stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) are a notoriously challenging topic in combining advanced theory of both partial differential equations and stochastic processes. However, it is due to this sophisticated combination of both concepts that they emerge as a powerful and versatile tool for modelling highly diverse phenomena in the sciences. While incredibly useful to describe these systems, utilising them jointly with data and measurements to accurately determine characteristics or provide reliable predictions is still a lot of work in progress in (applied) mathematics.
A central challenge, especially for junior researchers with an interest in the field, is that there is a major gap to overcome from available lecture materials, graduate courses and books to current problems and challenges in applied mathematics for SPDEs. We aim to support doctoral students in closing this gap, growing a network of junior researchers and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.
We, the organisers
look forward to meeting you!
Date
Monday, March 9, 2026 to Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
Location and arrival
The picture on the left shows the Mathematikon, which is located in the Neuenheimer Feld in Heidelberg and where the workshop will take place. The address is
Im Neuenheimer Feld 205 (INF 205),
69120 Heidelberg.
If you take public transport, there is one main option after arriving at Heidelberg main station („Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof“).
Take the tram (line 21 or 24) towards „Schriesheim Bahnhof“ or „Heiligenbergschule“ from the stop in front of the train station („HD-Hauptbahnhof“), and get off at the stop „Bunsengymnasium“. The journey takes about 5 minutes, and you arrive directly in front of the Mathematikon, as shown in the picture.
For a location plan as well as alternative possibilities of traveling, consult the webpage of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science (How to find us).
Basic information and procedure
The workshop is free of charge and we will provide coffee during the breaks as well as a dinner on Tuesday, March 10. However, we cannot provide lunch or cover the informal conference dinner (see below).
Every day of the conference will start with a two-block plenary session (twice 60 to 90 minutes), providing a primer in order to pick up the participants and to build a solid foundation in various aspects of Mathematics for SPDEs. The programme on Monday is scheduled to contain two of those sessions, while on Tuesday and Wednesday, after the respective introductory sessions, a few junior researchers can present on their current work in the respective field of study (5 in total, 30+5 minutes each). In addition, there will be a poster session on Tuesday afternoon, where, accompanied by some catering, both junior and senior researchers with different backgrounds, but shared interests beyond the workshop's main topics, have the opportunity to connect and exchange with each other.
Informal conference dinner
We are planning to have another (informal) conference dinner on Monday, March 9, where we will book a table at a local restaurant. Accordingly, please indicate in the registration if you plan to attend.
Support
We express our warmest thanks to HGS MathComp, KCDS, HIDA, SIAM & GAMM Student Chapter Heidelberg, STRUCTURES, and HEiKA particularly for their financial support and all their assistance in organising the workshop.
